The History

Fleur du Lac was originally constructed in 1938 as a hideaway for Henry Kaiser, who is most known as the prime contractor for the Hoover Dam as well as his creation of liberty ships during World War 2. When Kaiser purchased the property, he wanted to host a party to celebrate the completion of the Dam on the shores of Lake Tahoe, dedicating more than 300 construction workers to the project in 8-hour shifts, 24 hours a day. Once a “Mansion” was completed, it served as a vacation destination for Kaiser and the heads of five other companies that were instrumental in the Hoover Dam project, including the builder of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Trans Alaskan Pipeline. In addition to constructing 17 large residences, there were servant’s quarters, small cottages, a Yacht Club, marina, and a Boat House. The compound was nicknamed after Kaiser’s favorite hydroplane “Flower of the Lake” (Fleur du Lac) which was stored in the Boat House. Kaiser was a racing enthusiast and one can only imagine the shoreline dotted with SF socialites enjoying a day of racing.

After Kaiser sold the estate, it went through a series of transitional uses from the 1960s to 1979, including serving as a private school and movie set for many on-location scenes for Francis Ford Coppola's film, "The Godfather II." The main residence was the Lake Tahoe extension of crime boss Michael Corleone’s connections in the film. My husband, a Tahoe native, was invited to try out for a main child role as Al Paccino’s son during the filming, but that would have required him to remove his cowboy hat, which he was unwilling to do. To this day his older sister revels in making the cut in the film that he did not.

Fleur du Lac has changed hands several times over the years, and more structures have been built on the property. Not until the 1980’s did the secretive compound begin to refurbish existing key structures and transform original homes on the property to individually-owned “condominium” homes. Even so, Fleur du Lac remains the stuff of legend around North Lake Tahoe. As an owner or invited guest, you can step back in time and relive an era of Tahoe’s history well removed from public view.
