FIVE WAYS TO BUILD NEW TAHOE MEMORIES THIS SPRING

There is something about spring in Tahoe that blossoms, unlike any other area. As the days get longer and the temperatures climb higher, the possibilities explode to explore this beautiful area so many of us call home.

 

Skiing in the morning, waterskiing at lunch, mountain biking in the afternoon, and watching the sunset on the patio in the evening is more than just fun; it’s perfect. There are countless ways to make new Tahoe memories for the whole family this spring. Here a five of my favorite things to do in Tahoe in spring.

 

For those who don’t like to sacrifice one sport for the other, springtime presents a unique opportunity for locals. In the fresh morning air, the weather is perfect for taking a lap or two on skis or a snowboard. Ski resorts spin through April and oftentimes into May and beyond (in 2019, Squaw Valley-Alpine Meadows closed on July 7). Nearby backcountry skiing opportunities are endless, such as the twenty-minute drive from Truckee to Castle Peak, which provides views well work the skin up.

 

Lower-elevation trails are early to lose their snowpack, so when the higher-elevation snow becomes too soft to ski in the afternoon, it’s time to bring out the mountain bikes. Single-track options spin through budding trees, blossoming flowers, and unforgettable views of valleys, canyons, and mighty Lake Tahoe itself. One of the first trails to thaw after winter is the Emigrant Trail, which provides over 17 scenic miles around Truckee. Parking is available for easy access to begin throughout the trail.

 

When the alpine snow melts and travels downward, Tahoe waterfalls sitting empty throughout winter come alive and create a truly show-stopping experience. Waterfall season can be found in a short time with easy hikes like the 1.5-mile round-trip adventure to Cascade Falls in the Emerald Bay area. For a longer trip with a rewarding view, Horsetail Falls in the Desolation Wilderness flows nearly 500 feet for a spectacular show. Whether flowing into a river, a lake, or another feature, the waterfalls in the area are guaranteed to spark wonder and excitement for all who view it.

 

Most waterfall hikes in the area allow dogs on their trails, so there is no need to leave Fido at home. One of the greatest aspects of the Truckee-Tahoe area is its inclusivity to pets while exploring the natural world. Skiing, hiking, waterfall exploring – no matter the reason to get out, there’s a good chance your furry friends can join in the magic.

 

Many athletes want to push their training to the next level when spring arrives, and Truckee-Tahoe’s residents are eager to get after the available outdoor training opportunities. One of the best cardio opportunities includes skiing, mountain biking, and hiking. For a more straightforward approach to training regiments, the lower-elevation trails used for biking and hiking can be used for trail running. Nothing creates more motivation than breathing in the springtime alpine air and watching the world
come to life once more.

 

Trail running locations can be found throughout the Tahoe area, such as the expansive trail system at Tahoe Donner, located right in Truckee. With easy access, ambitious athletes will have the means to sign up for the area’s most popular races, including the Truckee Marathon, Olympic Valley Half Marathon, Big Chief 50K, and Donner Lake Triathlon.

 

The local food scene in Truckee-Tahoe is tasteful, to say the very least. Though the area is known for its mountains, it is also known for its farms, breweries, distilleries, and restaurants. Whether hungry diners are after a quick bite to eat after a morning adventure, an après beer on a sunny patio atmosphere, or a lingering evening filled with ambiance, there is something for all foodies to explore in the springtime. Especially with the possibility of warm outdoor seating once more, food never tasted so good.

 

Quality dining doesn’t have to be far from home, and many popular restaurants in the Tahoe area make sure quality, local options grace their menus as the warming weather provides fresh produce. Sprouts Café, located in South Lake Tahoe, offers organic, fresh options for all appetites. Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats is a delicious crowd favorite in Truckee. No child is too young to explore the wonder of Truckee-Tahoe. Getting children hooked on the outdoor experience this area has to offer can set them up for a lifetime of happiness as they explore their expansive backyard. Adventures can last an hour or a weekend, but there are no limits to the number of family-friendly activities one can dive into.

 

The easiest way to get the kids excited? Just bring them outside. Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee offers trails, a museum, and a glance at stunning Donner Lake. The little ones can stretch their legs on the hiking trails throughout Tahoe as they identify squirrels, birds, and beautiful budding flowers. Bring their imagination to life with an exploration of Perazzo Meadows along the Truckee River. Or, with multiple rental shops in the area, rent skis or bikes to kickstart their love of outdoor recreation. One of the best parts of creating family fun is knowing how short the commute will be from home.
